Hammonasset, you're still snappy!

The snappy campers kicked off the season last weekend with a visit to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison CT.   Hammonasset  continues to provide a good balance between the beauty of nature and creature comforts.  With over 550 sites, it feels more like a small New England town than a campground.

This year we stayed in Area 1 for the first time, on X Street.  While the sites in this "neck of the woods" are smaller than neighboring areas, the proximity to the outdoor amphitheater and relative remoteness make it a no less desirable locale than, say, the high-rent district on Beach Road.

Top 5 reasons to stay here:

  1. The beach is clean, not overly crowded and a 5-10 minute walk from any of the campsites.  During low tide the kiddies can watch hermit crabs run along the shoreline.  The sandbars seem to go on forever, making it a safe place to play without fear of being swept away.
  2. You can bring your beer.  No, I'm not a Frat boy-but there's nothing like throwing back a cold one while watching the sun set over the Long Island Sound
  3. The people who work here are actually nice.  All of them.  From the people who work at the front desk to the State Troopers on patrol.  Last year I heard an officer apologize to a driver he had pulled over.  Now you don't see that every day.
  4. It's a self-contained environment.  Once you arrive, you won't have to leave until you're ready to pack up.  The camp store is more robust than most (complete with golf carts that make visits to campsites to deliver necessities like ice and snow cones).  There are plenty of activities for those looking to take a break from the beach (bingo, ranger-led educational programs and outdoor movies to name a few).
  5. It feels natural.  Resort camping this is not.  You feel like you're part of the scenery, not an extra on a movie set.  On a morning walk you can take in the view of the expansive salt marsh, complete with a towering Osprey nest or just sit and watch the bustling non-human activity taking place in the pristine sand dunes.

The snappy camper had a most relaxing time and are greatly looking forward to another visit the Hammonasset next year.

Oh, and a big snappy welcome to Caroline who joined us for the first time.  She got a hold of the video camera and shot some "raw footage" of the campers on the beach.

      Helene,

      Sites X 9, X 11, X 13, X 15, X 17 and X 19 are very shady (in a good way).  Beach Road is NOT shady at all.

Hope to see you on the beach!
      Jennifer
